When you think of waterfront apartments, you may imagine high rises that steal the show from every one behind them. Or perhaps images of quaint cottages come to mind. In this former container port of Aarhus, Denmark, the Iceberg apartment complex is neither of those. Yet it gives views to every resident of its 208 apartments without compromising future buildings and views.
Four L-shaped units form the complex that’s placed at the outer most harbor front. The streets that connect the units face the surrounding sea. With intense study of potential views, the buildings took shape so that almost every apartment has the best in day light and vistas. This also created uneven, jagged, sloped, and intensely interesting building volumes, as in an iceberg.
The icy toned facades have standing seam pearly metal roofs, angular windows, recessed and protruding balconies of icy blue seas glass. The dynamics are amplified by the angles repeated from floor to floor in diagonal windows.
The lively forms translate inside as well to a wide range of modern housing – affordable small apartments, two-story units, high end penthouses. Ultimately these energetic buildings create a housing complex of architectural and social diversity.
