An abandoned 50-year old wooden house in Bangkok, Thailand, was completely dismantled and transformed into a gathering pavilion, a guesthouse and a small artist’s ceramic studio in the back of the garden.
The two floors of the original house were totally deconstructed, leaving only the columns which were reinforced later on. The roof was totally renewed with a new steel structure, and a storage space was added under the roof.
Apart from its untreated, artistic style, one of my favorite features of this building project was that every item has been cleverly recycled and nothing was left to waste: walls, doors and windows were recomposed and reused, its color peeled off, revealing a rustic ‘wabi-sabi’ look.
At first, the new building may seem like a blend of battered wooden boards but for me this is also what makes it full of personality and charm.
