These stylish pendant lamps are made from recycled cork, shedding a new light on the beauty of recycled material. Benjamin Hubert, who has previously designed hanging lamps made of concrete, has once again surprised us with an unusual material – cork.
Hubert is known for his rounded approach to design, taking into account not only the finished product but the manufacturing process as well. As with most modern designers today, along with form and function, sustainability and eco-friendly issues are also taken into consideration when designing new products. The beauty of these lamps is not only in their look but also in their unique production process.
The lamps are manufactured in Portugal using traditional wood working techniques. They are hand-turned out of large agglomerate cork blocks, constructed from waste cork from the manufacture of wine stoppers.
Turning the cork blocks produces a high volume of waste but as cork is an easily recyclable material, this waste is used again to make the next batch of lamps.
For the finished look of the lamp, the cork itself is smoothed over but retains its original texture and color, resulting in a stylish lamp with classic simplicity and a warm reflected glow. Benjamin Hubert created the “Float” hanging lamp for the Danish design firm Unique Copenhagen. These eco-friendly lamps definitely illuminate the fact that style and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.
