Small bungalow extension: stands in contrast

Situated on a 3,420 sq. ft. corner lot in Venice, LA., a small bungalow home has been extended with a new aluminum-sided addition. The two structures sharply contrast each other, and this is where it becomes interesting. The new extension has been set behind the original home, instead of next to it, resulting in better air flow and space distribution.

A 900 sq. ft. bungalow was not enough for the Trattner family – they wanted more space. It arrived in the form of a modern minimalist white box, expanding their living space to 1,600 sq. ft. with a new master suite and a private outdoor nook on the ground floor and a children’s bedroom upstairs.

The contrast between old and new has been emphasized – dark grey cement fiber board sidings vs aluminum, and wood flooring vs concrete.

Inside, the original house has been opened up to a spacious, colorful loft-like space with three operable skylights above the main living area, providing lots of natural light and ventilation.

A small deck, with a fire pit, and a light-filled corridor connect both buildings, allowing light and air to flow into the old kitchen and the new master bedroom. Exposed framing doubles as a screen along stairs leading to the daughter’s bedroom.
