This project is a renovation of an existing coastal home, located on a dramatic site in Kuaotunu, in New Zealand’s Coromandel Peninsula. The house belongs to the Sexton family and is full of cherished memories. It serves as a holiday home, consisting of a series of restrained pavilions composed for casual beachfront living.
The planning is based on a relaxed and informal lifestyle, almost like a camping experience of going from tent to tent; there’s no front entry; the separate pavilions are disconnected from the main living room; and everyday tasks are connected to the outside.
Sliding glass doors open up this home to its coastal surroundings, offering breathtaking sunsets and ocean views; shutters allow the house to be closed up while not in use.
Materials – like the untreated wood and zinc roof – reflect the relaxed coastal colors and the casual ambiance of taking a vacation.
