I can’t remember when I’ve come across a new concept for drinking glasses. Most of the new things I see are based on design (shapes, colors, textures etc) so it is refreshing when I come across an idea that “challenges” my mind. The Cipher glass managed to surprise me with its’ engaging quality of identifying my drink of choice.
Belgrad-based designer Damjan Stankovic came up with this cute new concept for drinking glasses. The Cipher glass looks innocent enough as it stands empty, decorated in a pattern of multi colored squares. These square patterns and the negative spaces between them seem random until you fill the glass with liquid. Once you pour the liquid into the glass it seems as if the glass has unique detective abilities to identify your drink and name it.
Actually this is a clever visual trick that has won Stanjkovic the Red Dot Award in 2009. Though the pattern seems random, once the glass is filled with the colored beverage, optically some of the colored squares blend into it and some stand out until you can identify the name of your drink written on the side of the glass: orange juice, milk, Coke.
Of course this won’t work if you pour in white milk and look at the glass from the “Coke” side, but it doesn’t take the fun out of this charming concept. It’s especially fun to see how the name is magically created as the liquid is poured into the glass.
So if you’re looking for a playful way to enjoy your beverages, this “psychic” Cipher glass is a great option.
