This cool minimalist clock takes the concept of DIY to a whole new level. I’ve seen many clocks that you can custom make, but they usually consist of an element (the clock and “hands” mechanism) that you can attach to a designed surface of your choice, most common being of course the old LP records!
Designer Kouichi Okamoto, along with ceramicist Daniel Jo, has come up with a new concept that lets you create your own custom-made time piece using water and any vessel you choose.
The Water Clock consists of a ceramic base topped with a pair of magnetic spheres. Underneath the ceramic surface of the base is a pair of powerful magnets. The “hands” of the clock are in the shape of two small orbs. The orbs are magnetic and buoyant, so if you fill up a glass with water, they actually float to the surface and then move in a circular path to tell the current time.
Now all you need to do is start playing around with constructing your “clock-de-jour”. The orbs can be placed in any dish, plate, or glass you have lying around, so you can get creative and experiment ( I don’t know if the consistency of the liquid effects the movement so I haven’t tried using other liquids than water, but I have tinted the water with a few drops of food coloring and the effect is great).
I love this water clock, it’s very elegant and great fun.
