Deeds Cottage is a small garden outbuilding, that serves as a lovely art studio/home office with an irregular pentagon shape to maximize interior space. It sits on a 3,100 sq. ft. lot, near the main house, a renovated 1906 Victorian, in a tree-lined street in Berkeley, California.
This compact structure has been constructed from various salvaged and recycled materials, which include salvaged FSC-certified wood, formaldehyde-free fiberglass, denim insulation, salvaged redwood siding, and a salvaged glass aluminum front door.
Windows are all-weather double-glazed aluminum. The south-facing wall features a large high window, overlooking a buckeye tree, that maximizes winter sun exposure and adds to the passive solar heating of the space.
To maximize interior space every inch has been carefully utilized; a long book shelf stretches across the wall; a large curved desk offers a comfortable work space; and a built-in couch-bed offers sitting and storage drawers underneath.
