This project has become a landmark of Salbkeneighbourhood in Magdeburg, Germany. Vivid colors, unusual forms, pavilions, funny elevations and layouts attract attention to this public space. But what is the function of this place?
This is an open air library, which has been created and used by the residents of the neighborhood themselves. The books just lay on the shelves on the walls of the project’s pavilions.
The aim of the project was not only to freshen up the district visually by means of new architecture substance (this could even be the secondary task), but to stimulate new development inside the neighborhood, to plant new beginnings for the desired prosperity of the district, to strengthen people’s communication, to make them more conscious as those who live here and need to deal with the neighborhood’s problems.
So it was decided that the residents’ initiative and acceptance would be important for every stage of the project from the very beginning. Thus, the 1:1 model of the planned pavilions was built of beer crates by the residents. This model managed at once to host a local 2-day poetry festival.
As a final result, we see a very cheerful open space with sitting terraces, grass lawns, a few trees and a library pavilion row. The higher building volume is positioned on the ultimate corner of the site, as if “protecting” the whole space from the crossroad and forms a picturesque corner accent for the neighborhood’s landscape.
Its “perforated” white facade material has been prefabricated and reused from a demolished building; it has this extremely stylish combination with the deep green color of window glass.
Such a wonderful initiative – Let us hope for a more promising future for the Salbke District.
