The idea behind the Cocoon came to life when designer Per Eriksson decided to create a private living space within his small and-not-so-private house.
As rooms and furniture tend to have one fixed function, the Cocoon offers a variety of functions by adding different modules, like sleeping, storage, and even cooking. Oh, and for all you techies out there, there’s Wi-Fi as well.
“The Cocoon is something different, it’s not only a chair like Eero Aarnios Bubble chair. The size makes the Cocoon into a room and the modules makes it into a furniture. To be honest, it’s hard even for us to really make out exactly what it is and if it’s useful, but we’re happy with the outcome and are currently testing different modules.” – says Per.
Rethinking the concept of spaces – rooms, houses, countries or worlds – the Cocoon serves as a piece of furniture that defines a new space, whether on the floor or elevated, at home or outdoors. It transcends the border between object and space and challenges how we perceive furniture. It is spacious enough to create a room, but not so large that it will not fit into one.
The Cocoon 1, by Micasa Lab, is completely transparent and measures 180 cm in diameter. It is currently a prototype and not in production. However, according to the designer, its next destination is going to be on the top of a mountain – with a small fireplace and chimney installed – to serve as a small getaway… Sounds pretty good to me.
