What on Earth is 4K? It seems like there is no end to screen resolutions, and they get sharper and sharper. I wouldn’t be surprised that at some point TV screen resolutions get so clear that something will happen to our physiology. Until that point, it’s exciting to see what technology companies engineer to improve visual clarity.

Leave it to television standard-bearers Sony to push this impressive 4K into popular electronics. The term refers to a screen resolution of 4096 x 2160 pixels. Confusing? Put another way, 4K is four times our current high-definition screen resolution, 1080p.

Sony is already distributing their 4K series of televisions, and as a companion to this impressive visual experience, you can buy the FMP X1, a media player that exclusively streams 4K-quality video.

This slick, black, circular player accesses Sony’s library of 4K films–for a fee, but I’d assume it’s worth the cost. For those who might be uncomfortable with pay-to-watch films, the FMP X1 comes pre-loaded with 4K remastered films like The Bridge on the River Kwai, Taxi Driver, and The Amazing Spider-Man.

The FMP X1’s design indicates its delivery. Completely utilitarian and sleek, the FMP X1 is itself a product of high-resolution.
