The established rug and carpet design house Nani Marquina has released the Natural Rug Collection this year, composed of 8 styles made from 4 different raw materials, all ultra-natural and kept that way. Afghan wool, Jute, Silk and our favorite Nettle are tamed with simple but hard work manual processes to softer forms of themselves. They are then simply knotted, knitted or woven into rugs that come in custom sizes.
The essence of this collection’s design is the celebration of natural. Rather than using all our human artifices to dye, cover or re-hash the final appearance, the raw material is carried through to the overall look.
This celebration of the subtle color and pile variations give the rugs a deep texture and allows them to change with lighting. And what a lot there is to celebrate about them, each source has a unique story. Afghan wool that grows to a precious 30cm, Nettles that are seen as weeds and thus superabundant, Jute that is naturally antistatic, and silk that is one of the strongest fibers built by animals.
Aside from what’s inside the Natural Rug Collection, they have a versatile beauty on the outside. They’re neutral but warm, personal but adaptable, and therefore could be adept for formal houses or cozy ones. They are also happily child-friendly, as not only are tiny stains hard to spot, but they are super soft and lack harsh chemical residues. There’s even a special Eco cleaning product to go with them. We especially love the texture of the Earth Jute rugs, and the color of the Nettle collection.
Total heights range from 16mm to 14mm, and weigh around 4kg/m2. Prepared rug sizes come in 170cm x 240 cm and 200cm x 300cm. Custom sizes are also available.
