As part of a collection concept to celebrate the beautiful material that is sustainable Finnish wood, NIKARI invited 12 designers to conjure a piece in said material, one for each month of the year. There were only 12 of each piece produced last year, from stools to shelves to a wooden chandelier, and part of the sales are donated to WWF Finland for saving forests worldwide.
The concept is neat, the material is neat, and the designs themselves are neat. The collection hangs together on it’s clean and warm coloration, as treatments are kept to a minimum (natural oil mixtures), letting the pine, elm, oak ash and maple sing. A very successful way to show that wood products are a delight, and that sustainable sources should be the norm, instead of razing rainforests for furniture we soon forget.
Without space to discuss all 12, we picked out our 3 favorites worth a closer look, but don’t let that stop you browsing the complete harvest further down below!
The January table by Harri Koskinen is a lovely sturdy and pure long table, with rounded legs and a sloping lower ledge.
Meanwhile the March wall bench is a cunning and light storage solution in beautifully crafted oak by Marti Guixe.
Finally (my favorite) the October chair by Samuli Naamanka is a smooth and ergonomic seat, with a really pure and restful look, in ash.
The pieces are classically Finnish and thus would match perfectly in Scandinavian-inspired interiors. They would fit alongside other natural materials, like on a black slate kitchen floor, or against a leather clad wall, but should definitely be kept clear of tons of other wood, or you’ll loose their special story. With such limited production too, you’ll want to show off you got a piece of this conservation and design marriage history!
Responsible design worth worshiping!
