Space saving furniture is usually not that good looking, but it must be inconspicuous, and it must be clever. The whole of the CLEI modular system that includes sleeping, living, working and dining functions, excels in these traits. It is so clever and well engineered that you may mutter as you watch the videos. What’s more, it is bordering on actually quite good looking.
The ‘look’ of the pieces is classic Italian design, with unfussy block colors, brushed aluminum and simple textiles. The range of finishes is wide, so designers can select by Pantone if they’re fussy. Shapes are kept simple too. The real special part is their movements. Hinges and joints work smoothly and safely, and are put in just the right spaces to pack as much as possible behind closed doors. All beds are sprung wooden frames, so despite being super thin, they’re also comfortable.
Focusing on the beds (as all those Queens and Kings we keep take up a lot of floorspace), we are particularly impressed by the doubles Ulisse and Nuovoliola10, and the Telemaco single.
Ulisse is a simple Vertical opening Queen that folds up to leave a blank wall behind it. The Nuovolioa is similar, but leaves a skandi-chic sofa behind with similarly light and simple aesthetic.
Finally Telemaco is a real smartass; a single that folds downwards over a desk, whilst the desk remains completely horizontal, then fits underneath (for when you just.crash.out).
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, with the price of square footage so painfully in most urban areas, any furniture that helps us to maximize it is more than welcome. CLEI system achieves these desires with an Italian nonchalance and a designer’s attention to finishing. Though the obvious market is commercial residences (Universities, holiday apartments etc), the pieces are buff enough to also work in a normal home (and a lush one at that).
