Manor House Stables: a rustic conversion

Conversion is one of the most interesting experiences in architecture. In Hampshire, England, an old stable was converted into a three-bedroom family home without losing its original appearance. Manor House Stables testifies the challenging task behind such an outstanding approach to ancient buildings.

A single-story building made of brick and stone, with a gently sloping gabled roof, respects the traditional shape and volume of British stables. The challenge was clear: convert the interior into living spaces without losing the original character and atmosphere.

To retain the original timber partitions, few changes were made to the existing plan: rooms were developed in the old stables and a corridor area was stretched out in front. The distribution of the program respects the following order: three bedrooms are placed in the western end of the building, while a kitchen and dining room are positioned at the center of the building. The living room extends its space out to a small terrace on the eastern side.

An ingenious solution was conceived in order to maintain the old stables’ unique character: original doors were restored inside the house, while the old timber-framed windows were replaced with modern glazing and powder-coated steel frames.

To preserve the facade absent of any kind of new openings, skylights were designed to bring more light through the roof. White painted walls and ceiling dominates the interior surfaces, interrupted by the polished concrete flooring for all social and private areas and the dark tiles that line the walls and floors of each of the bathrooms. Such a wonderful restoration work! One can only imagine the serenity that irradiates from Manor House Stables…
