Are you familiar with the work of Munich-based designer, Konstantin Grcic? If not, the Medici chair, one of his creations, is a good reason to do so! Originally trained as a cabinet maker, Grcic undoubtedly has been making an impressive portfolio throughout the years with a number of awards and nominations under his belt. Grcic has developed furniture and lighting for some of the leading companies of design, including among many others Vitra, Flos, Muji, Thoman Rosenthal and Mattiazzi, for which last one he came up with the wonderful Medici chair.
Medici – a word that somehow brings to my mind a connection with meditation – is a low model with comfortable declined posture, appropriate both for indoor and outdoor use, depending on the material it’s made of.
I see it as a very bold creation, both for its generous size and the dynamic lines the designer embraced. Yet, the model appears simple, minimalist and elegant at the same time, too. Of course it makes a great choice to use not only in private homes, somewhere in a corner by a large window for example, where it not only provides seating but also as a piece of modern art, but also in public spaces, where a larger cluster and grouping of them would be possible.
I’d love to see the mustard yellow and grey ones paired together among a larger number of natural toned ones, perhaps at a hotel lobby, where everything else design speaking is left understated. For my future home, where a patio will be part of the living residence, I’d seriously consider adding a pair of Medici chairs made from thermo-treated ash, which will bare the elements. For indoors, the model is also available in American walnut and Douglas fir.
