Dowe-Sandes Residence: Melting Pot in Morocco

In the French “new town” area of Marrakech, a small bungalow melds the best of ancient and modern and global. Caitlin Dowe-Sandes, who along with her husband, Samuel, owns the Moroccan tile company Popham Design, use a bright bold palette and graphics to create a home bubbling over with personality.

The fresh tone is established in the entry where you’re greeted by a wash of indigo and white in zig zag floor tile of their own design. Drawing you in the narrow corridor is lined with wide stripes of indigo and white that stretch all the way to the ceiling.

The living room’s jewel tone teal walls unite the mix of burled wood, brass, marble, and a delightful large graphic tile that eliminates the need for any carpet. I’m always impressed by a confident mix of paintings and styles displayed to make a grand gesture together.

In the study, a French art deco arm chair, a headdress from Cameroon, and a Cuban desk from a Parisian flea market may seem quite serious left to their own devices. Yet combined it’s like you’ve gathered your most interesting friends together and they make each other shine.

In the bath the teal pops up again on the claw foot tub and a generous vintage white porcelain pedestal sink floats on and in front of the Popham Design hex zig zag tiles. The main bedroom sports their hex tiles on the floor and the face of the tiny corner fireplace.
