Good – no, great interior design comes in all shapes and sizes. Two enterprising architects, Michael Chen and Kari Anderson of Michael Chen Architecture PLLC, have created this small New York City apartment, a lively twist on the old saying “great things come in small packages”…
The team’s goal was to design a space for a single man living in Manhattan who loves to entertain and occasionally works at home. The challenge was to make this possible in a tiny 400 square foot studio, without feeling cramped or claustrophobic.
Flexibility is key with this modular unit, which when opened in various configurations can serve as a bedroom, home office, kitchen storage, or even a small library to house the client’s book collection.
Functionality is well served with grips and handles at varying heights by which the client can open or close compartments, based on his needs.
The bright pop of royal blue nestles this unit between a diminutive yet fully equipped kitchen and cozy seating area, designed with the mid-century modernist in mind.
The team even designed room for guests, check out the Design Within Reach/Case Study daybed and Eames molded side chairs. Simple white window treatments allow natural light to stream into the apartment, another highly sought commodity in NYC.
Another great result of this configuration is that it encourages the inhabitant to keep things organized!
