Nest is an adaptive thermostat and smoke alarm that seems like the first installment you’d have in a “Smart House.” Designed to change according to your heating and cooling habits, Nest will create its own schedule to save energy.
Instead of having a siren-like wail warn you that the toast you already know was burnt is smoking, Nest warns you with a pleasant voice.
Even before the voice warns you, a series of colored lights present different signals, just like a stoplight. If you know that there’s no alarm, you can “wave off” Nest and quickly silence it.
If away from your home, Nest will transmit real time information to your smartphone so you can monitor heating, cooling, fire hazards, and supervise your home safety.
Working in tandem, Nest’s carbon monoxide alarm and thermostat will make your home safe if there’s a warning. If the alarm senses unsafe levels of carbon monoxide, it will trigger the Nest thermostat to shut off the gas furnace.
I will be eager to see what other areas of smart home design Nest moves into.
