The unusual interior design of this Toronto condominium has a fantastic story behind it. Dr. Amir Khakshaee and Reza Aliabadi are longtime friends. Dr. Khakshaee purchased a photograph taken by Reza during an Arctic sailing trip and commissioned Aliabadi, owner of the design firm Atelier Rzlbd, to recreate the “sensation” of this photograph.
Under both tight budget and timeline, the designer had a monumental undertaking with this project. Starting with the base, wood floors were removed and the underlying concrete was stained steel blue and finished with a high gloss. Furnishings are all designed to feel like they are drifting on top of the floor.
The large kitchen countertops and island were removed and replaced with white counters and a dining table cantilevers out from a support beam to mimic the feeling of floating on ice.
The 31 foot curved glass wall that anchors the main living area has an unobstructed view as a result of the removal of bulky curtains replaced with simple white shades.
One of my favorite design elements is the hanging basket chair. Sleek in design, it allows the owner to relax and enjoy his incredible views of Toronto and feeling like he is floating on an iceberg without the harsh elements that accompany it.
Aptly named “Blue Pie” by its owner, due to its wedged shape living area, is a homage to wide open vistas and the natural beauty of the Arctic, this incomparable abode is perfectly suited to its new inhabitant.
