Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, is one of the fastest growing cities in Europe and is known as the capital of Scandinavia. Jonas Wagell, an Architect and proud owner of this tiny apartment which measures a mere 36 square meters (approx. 365 square feet) would be considered too small by most of us.
Several years ago, when Jonas was studying interior architecture and furniture design at Konstfack University, he chose this apartment as a summer project. The building was constructed in 1937 and had not been renovated since the 1980s. The apartment had a disorienting flow and lacked character.
Jonas, who did the majority of the renovation labor himself, included the tearing down of unnecessary walls, removal of some doors and a walk-in closet to create an open floor plan. He added darkly stained floors arranged in a herringbone pattern, which adds a feeling of expansiveness.
The four foot wide sleeping alcove is tucked away adjacent to the main living area. Lighting is recessed into the wall and ceiling, which creates a soft glow at night.
Furnishings are simple and functional. Occasional chairs and a large basket with open slats create the illusion of space. The galley kitchen is small but up for the task of an amateur chef.
Jonas Wagell has truly embraced the idea of making more with less and has done it with style, grace and a lot of love.
