Concrete, an incredibly versatile material can be traced back to the Roman Empire. It has always been widely used in commercial applications but has recently made a comeback in the contemporary esthetic world of residential design. Studio Karhard designed this unique project, the conversion of a family home in Berlin, Germany.
A delight for the senses, it includes a wondrous palette of materials such as concrete, wood and leather and a mix of hues to break up the predominantly neutral backdrop. Obviously this home was designed with a careful nod towards the curation of objects, including the custom metal towel warmer that serves a dual purpose, to warm the textiles and to also create a visual appetizer for the eyes.
An element of surprise waits for us around the corner as we enter the hallway/library swathed in dandelion yellow. Upstairs, a children’s room is decorated with both elegance and a nod to whimsy. Pale green and claret work well together in this space, with the custom butterfly inspired wallpaper bringing in a delicate natural element.
Another surprise pop of color awaits us in the upstairs bathroom. Masculine grey tile and simple white fixtures could result in an ordinary bathroom, but not in this home. Fully saturated neon red cabinetry and well-placed stool make this bathroom one of a kind.
Texture plays an important role in this home, wood floors laid in a herringbone pattern, simple birch closets, dark gray slate flooring and leather covered mirrors are just a few examples of this exceptionally well executed design plan.
