Bank St Townhouse renovation

Renovating a historic home can be daunting, but not for the team at Steven Harris Architects, LLP. Steven Harris comes with an impressive resume. He is a Professor of Architecture at Yale University and has a tender spot for exploring the architectural potential of urban living, particularly in New York City. This home has been tastefully updated and decorated with an engaging style.

Built in 1840, this structure was in dire need of a total renovation. As the story goes, the bricks on the front were loose enough to remove by hand. In addition to restoring the facade, a fifth floor was added to seamlessly blend with the original architecture.

The combination of high ceilings and classic features such as crown molding were re-created to mimic details that are expected in pre-war dwellings. This attention to detail creates a perfect backdrop for the interior design philosophy of this gracious home.

As we move through the rooms, the overall esthetic is calm, cool and collected. Professor Harris is a firm believer that in an urban environment, space is a luxury and should not be overly designed. A monochromatic color scheme is on full display throughout the spaces, intriguing textures such as oak wood flooring, subtle wall coverings of sisal and grasscloth, result in a home that is both organic in design and soothing in ambiance.

Furnishings are an interesting collection of modern, vintage and custom, including the vintage Knoll swivel chairs in the living room and Ma Bell chairs by Ceccotti in the dining room.
