I can picture this 55 sq.m. home and its luxurious furnishings when it was built in Moscow, prior to the revolution. Now its classic and stunning bones have been maintained to create a contemporary home with a new definition of luxury.
The herringbone wood floors make me swoon with their rich character and subtle pattern. Thick walls create deep window wells that touch the floor and the generous yet delicate plaster crown moulding. Wall panels are defined by wood trim. All of this, swathed in white, creates a luminous back drop for the modern interventions.
A crisp black box has been inserted on the side of the essentially square space. It encloses the amenities for modern life…bath, wardrobe, kitchen, and boiler room. It also defines the house’s entrance creating a delightful surprise when you reach the bright shared spaces for living, dining, and sleeping.
An island dining table appears as functional sculpture on the wood floors and accentuated by the black box kitchen. It’s lit by three polished chrome diminutive pendants that contrast delightfully with the home’s historic character.
Two low caramel leather lounges share a rug near the floating raven slab fireplace that projects from the molded wall panels. A slab desk does the same between the fire and the sleeping space. It’s lit by six tiny spots that hang from angular onyx wires. Ebony upholstery forms a simple head board with wide tufts. A mod sculptural globe light hangs between the bed and the glass walled bath.
