Berlin is the home of this thoughtfully reconstructed historic home. The client’s choice in architect was none other than the vibrant Thomas Kroger of the firm TKA. On the outside, this home has retained its historic elegant facade. Upon entering this stately home, I am awestruck by its thoughtful partnership of old world details and contemporary aesthetics. The paired down palette of color, detail and finishes all add up to a sophisticated yet understated combination that simply works.
Smooth plaster walls painted in a sea glass blue, warm up the dark woods on the ceiling and floors of the foyer. In contrast, the main salon is painted in a snappy white anchored by light herringbone wood floors. The fireplace is modern and reminiscent of a ski chalet in a James Bond movie from the 1960’s. Simple furnishings settle into this room, which can be easily adapted for entertaining.
The family room is cozier, the fireplace in this space looks to be original and there is no clutter, allowing for the architecture to shine. A soffit ceiling has been added to hide up-lighting.
This lovely shade of blue continues into the dining room, breakfast nook and kitchen areas, unifying the entrance spaces with the back of the house. Interesting bead board paneling is used on both the walls and the cabinetry, creating the textural quality in these spaces.
The upper rooms are free of intense color, the palette remains neutral, allowing natural light to play a dominant role in these rooms.
