I can’t resist a 17th century stone villa restored to glorious understated luxury. The two story structure of stone walls and clay tile roofs create an impenetrable protective cocoon. From the moment you step through the grand stone Romanesque arched entrance and massive wooden doors, you feel a sense of calm envelop you. Polished concrete slabs are cooling in the Majorcan heat. Yet the warmth they collect in the day radiates back to you in the evening.
Time worn exterior stone walls are exposed on the interior and accentuated by the soft creamy plaster of new walls that define the public spaces. Indoors and out, the palette is neutral and features the textures of wood, stone, metal, glass, and steel. Banquettes, chairs, and tables are crafted of wood and reeds provide seats and backs for lounging. Billowy linens drape the deeply recessed windows, benches, desk chairs, and bedding. Glass lamps, pendants, vases, and statement art pieces in the colors of clay are the only accessories.
The Grand Suite draws you in through a definitive white framed arch centered over the sleeping area. Crisp and smooth the arch and the stone wall it permeates are a striking yet subtle play of textures. The suite is a perfect example of the luxury inherent in the allure of form and purity. Resting under a wide stone arch, the bed is backed by a long wooden table, perhaps formerly a bench. Glass bedside lamps and back lighting cast a glow that accentuates the quiet grace.
