Modern Boathouse

You may not yet have dreamt of a place for relaxation along with boat storage. Now you will when you immerse yourself in to this creation by Weiss Architecture & Urbanism Limited. Picture an island in the archipelago of Georgian Bay in Ontario. It’s a four-season getaway with unlimited natural beauty where still waters reflect the mostly evergreen forest that springs from the rocky land.

The structures are designed for the family’s leisure activities and the gear they require. A weathered cedar deck extends from the boulder strewn shore far in to the quiet bay. The first structure resting on the deck is a black stained cedar cube. Its presence is diminished by its shadowy cladding, as it appears to be a reflection on the bay. The exposed exterior fasteners complement the silvery wood tones.

Notched in to a corner is a food prep and storage area. Its red cedar interior is unfinished, creating an inviting contrast. Steel framed and canvas covered, an awning shields the stainless steel corner dining bar. The canvas canopy stretches out to the end of the deck, all along its length providing shade and protection from the weather for dining and lounging. Surrounded on three sides by water, the end pavilion is steel framed, it sky lit pierced roof is wrapped in terne coated copper and its ceiling of wooden strips.

Inside the boat storage cube is a pure expression of structural simplicity. Two enormous cedar doors swing open for easy access to water sports gear. Wooden L-brackets fastened to the structure provide support for gear, keeping the floor clear and the equipment organized. Sky lights illuminate the red cedar’s warm tones.
