Giant Lampshades

Lightemotion has taken residential lighting to the streets in a brilliantly colorful way. Lighting Cartier Avenue in Quebec City are 34 giant, eight feet in diameter and five feet tall, drum lamp shades. In this chilly cosmopolitan mecca for winter sports, the shades send a signal of welcoming warmth. To the street that’s vibrant with night life, restaurants, and shops, the shades add another level of excitement.

Collaborating with the city’s major museum of fine arts, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, Lightemotion turned the 34 lampshades into an outdoor art gallery. The paintings of two Québécois artists, Alfred Pellan and Fernand Leduc, are reproduced inside the giant fixtures. Their pieces were hand selected from the museum’s permanent collection. Leduc’s works with their abstract geometric studies of light contrast and complement Pellan’s surreal and expressionist creations with a visually arresting rhythm.

Designed to enhance the architectural and technical restraints of the city, the shades are strategically placed to create a moving outdoor art gallery. The exhibit, intended to be temporary, can also be extended indefinitely. Lit with ribbons of LED, the shades can be lined with new artistic pieces, seasonal designs, or event themes. I’d make plans to see them now!
