It is remarkable what one company has brought in to our homes since the late 1940s. Even more admirable is how Marimekko is still leading the way with the freshest, boldest, and timeless designs. In their Spring 2015 Mindscapes Home collection, once again nature is the inspiration. Their new textile designs bring the freedom of the sea inside our homes, giving us a daily escape and dose of refreshing, inspiring, vibrant, and soothing natural colors.
From the water to the animal life and plants in the sea, the collection has a movement, ease, and newfound freedom. Luovi is my favorite, though admittedly, it is difficult to choose. Luovi covers you in a frothing, energetic wave of bubbling color. Marimekko’s famously saturated hues burst forth in the ocean’s rich blues and greens.
In his debut collection, Finnish artist Kustaa Saksi went to the ocean floor and captured the swaying vitality and variety of sea anemones. The Merivuokko print captures the dark side of this gorgeous predatory creature and balances the deep sea blue with rich amber. Brighter tones of azure waters dance with sea shell yellow and clown fish orange swims with ultramarine in a complex symphony of movement.
Sea grass is delicately and graphically depicted in Meriheina. In tones of daybreak yellow, fading sunset orange, and flax flower blue (of which the fabric is made) the rhythmic pattern soothes.
