Vintage Casa: A Well-Traveled Home

What I admire most about well-traveled individuals is their ability to travel spontaneously and lightly. They always seem to pack just the perfectly appropriate clothing and items for any weather or situation. Or is it that they adapt very quickly to circumstances? I’m guessing this psychologist/homeowner travels as lightly as his home and in the most stylish way. Continue reading

An unexpectedly wooden apartment in Stockholm

wooden-apartment-flkhm

A wooden… apartment? Somehow the adjective wooden is usually accompanying nouns like table, chair and house but apartment, no! At least not until the Stockholm based construction company Folkhem made it a reality. This lovely apartment is a part of a unique project consisting of 4 houses and 124 apartments in Sundbyberg Beach Park just off the waterfront – all designed by Sweden’s Wingardhs Architects. It will be the very first eight-story building built entirely of wood in this part of Stockholm. I still cannot get over the beauty of this apartment’s exterior and imagine how it would feel to actually be at the veranda totally surrounded by wooden floors, walls in combination with some clear glass and breathtaking views to nature. Armadillo Summer House: Armor and Glass

summer-house-armadillo

I must admit I’m completely smitten lately with tile exteriors. Of course pair that with another love of mine, expanses of glass through which I can watch nature, and I’m over the edge. Here I think it is the intense contrast that appeals to me, that of weight and weightless, brilliant and dark, protected and vulnerable. That artful balance of opposites was created here in the Armadillo Summer House by architect Sergio Mahkno. Continue reading

Palazzo Orlandi: 18th century Italian villa restoration

italian-villa-restoration-baa

It’s difficult to even imagine the state of this late 18th century Italian villa when the restoration, designed by architects Sabrina Bignami and Alessandro Cappelero, began after a 20 year vacancy. So many aspects are daunting and the frescoes lying dormant under a thick coat of white paint would have turned most away. Yet the owner’s decision was not to perform a meticulously accurate restoration but to uncover the hidden beauty and then honor its age and imperfection. Saving the ancient floors was a rewarding labor of love, whether it is the intricate hand painted tile or the herringbone brick. Continue reading
