modern interior design tree 9 - Nature and Architecture Become One

Nature and Architecture Become One

modern-interior-design-tree

Paz Arquitectura built this house in Santa Rosalia, Guatemala, with the intention to merge architecture with nature – to impose a structure into a natural landscape with minimal disturbance to the environment.

They succeeded so well, that you will actually find massive trees growing through this home! When you are inside the home, the extensive use of glass makes you feel like you are living at one with the nature outside. Nature creeps into this home, visually and literally. Continue reading

spanish sea side home 7 - A Spanish Sea-Side Home Filled with a Calm Strength

A Spanish Sea-Side Home Filled with a Calm Strength

spanish-sea-side-home

This beautiful Barcelona sea-side home was designed by Spanish interior designer Susanna Cots. I’m sharing it with you here because I’m overwhelmed by the calm strength of this interior.

The lighting and the color scheme of this home is inspired by the sea, the materials and textures pull that mood right in. The rustic heavy wood from the dining table and coffee table remind us of driftwood and provide a perfect balancing contrast to the rest of the smooth, linear space. Continue reading

An Amazing Danish Interior Makeover

loft-makeover-danish

When Lene and Stig found this place, it looked so far off from what you see now, you wouldn’t recognize it at all. It was actually eight small dorm rooms which they turned into one fabulous loft space. Pretty amazing!

What’s more amazing is that they lived there, up in the small attic, during the entire remodel. They started at the bottom and worked their way up. I think when you experience something like that, you develop a strong bond with your space – it’s apparent to me as I view the images. Continue reading

Dreams of Greece: A Seaside Home

greek-home-design-1

When you look at the images of this home, you can tell it’s a Greek seaside home by its thick rounded edge white-washed walls, all curvy and soft, and that distinguishable white and blue color palette. It’s all bright, airy and light, balanced out with some strong rustic accents. But then there’s an interesting twist in the decor – a sort of elegant french country flair. Continue reading

In Brooklyn and Full of Brick

nyc-home-office-brick4

Old exposed brick walls seem like they have so much to say, don’t they? I imagine that maybe once they were covered up but now they’re free. Many of them are worn but have stood the test of time. They exude wisdom and comfort and they seem to offer support and protection.

OK, for those of you who don’t have an absurdly complex connection to brick walls (like me!), you absolutely can not deny their charm. The material itself instantly adds an interesting textural element to any space, like we see happening in this apartment right here. But the brick is only one of the elements that makes this studio apartment so sweet. Continue reading

White Street Loft: Transformative Interior Design

This place is somewhat of a wonderland! It’s impressive, modern, fun and full of volumes and modules. Designed by WORKac, it includes a ground floor, half a basement and a third of a sub basement, which essentially makes it an inverted triplex.

The owners wanted something nontraditional, a flexible loft space that could easily adapt and transform depending on the function of the desired activity, including big dinner parties, fashion shows and you know, other such regular family activities. The result is a space that is ‘whimsical and unexpected’. Continue reading

The FJ House: Modern Vibe, Quirky Spirit

‘Woah’ is the word that escaped me when I stumbled upon this project. What struck me first was the lighting scheme. It’s very original, very modern and adds serious visual impact to the space. The rest of the images were so delightful that I had to share the project with you here. Continue reading

Dutch Mountain: A Surprise Filled Eco Friendly Home ‘in’ a Hill

eco-friendly-home-design

This eco friendly home, designed by Deniewegeneratie Studio, is actually embeded ‘in’ the hill on which it lives. It saves on energy costs since it is designed to keep the inside temperature stable all year round.

The interior is fundamentally a tall, vast rectangle flooded by natural light. The spaces are delineated by semi-temporary wooden volumes and structures. It was important to the owners that they be able to somewhat easily adapt and make changes to the indoor layout as the family needs change over time. Continue reading

Wooster Street Loft: A Modern Loft with Oodles of Interest

penthouse-loft-design-wac

I was struck by what a good job WORKac did with the unusual layout of this trendy SoHo loft. This well thought out, long narrow space is airy and open and has so much personality.

The ceiling’s highest points are at the front and back of the space in order to maximize light from the windows that are located there. The painted white brick wall is a nice contrast to the opposing dark sleek wall. That dark, bronze coated wall actually serves to organize the space while keeping it streamlined – a really clever solution. Behind/within the wall are the kitchen storage, elevator and entrance doors, bathrooms and a laundry space. Continue reading

The Farm: A rural dream

farmhouse-decor-dormers

What was once an old and neglected 150-acre farm has been transformed into a beautiful rural dream. The property belongs to the Dormers who bought it as their second home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It consists of a large Amish barn, more than a century old, tool shed, greenhouse, and five ‘view houses’ – each one portraying a blend of glamour and rustic charm. Continue reading
