Haroshi is a Japanese sculpture who creates beautiful works of art from old skateboards. While to us novices they may all seem the same, skateboard structure varies according to factory, brand or popular skater’s signature models.

From his early teens Hiroshi has been a passionate skateboarder. His connection to skateboards goes beyond the sport and his choice of art portrays this. His creations reflect his spirit and aesthetic as a Japanese, for him the art pieces are equal to his skateboards and as a major part of his life they also serve as a means of communicating with himself and with the outside world. Digital photo frames have been around for a while. Most people I know have one (or more) because they received it as a present. After loading it once with pictures, they usually can’t be bothered to reload it again and it just “sits around” repeatedly showing a slideshow of one point in time. Eventually someone in the family gets frustrated enough to unplug the thing and add it to the “trendy gifts we got and aren’t going to use again” box.

I was really impressed when I read about the “Second Chance” initiative by TourDeFork. Apart from the unspeakable fact that in the Western world, a large percent of the food we buy is simply thrown out uneaten, we also produce a lot of organic waste.

Traditionally in Italy and rural areas in other countries, people make creative use of all parts of the food they grow, not just the edible parts. My first thought was: do I really need another vase? Because the truth is that even though I have a few I never seem to have exactly the right sized one and then I have to make my flowers fit the vase instead of the other way around.
