Designers are elevating plastic design to a whole new level. The Marie-Louise Lamp, created by Dutch designer Sander Mulder, truly exemplifies this ingenuity. The designer chose to re-define the traditional ambient lamp. To this end, the Marie-Louise Lamp has a shape of a traditional lamp, and then it takes a dramatic shift. The lamp is composed of 16 transparent contours made from acrylic and polycarbonate. I am always inspired by artists who take “defined” objects and place them in a new and refreshing context. Polish based artist Pani Jurek, did just this when she created the Maria S.C. Chandelier from laboratory test tubes. The result is a colorful and playful design with a strong reference to the classical European chandelier. What is even more wonderful is that the Maria S.C. Chandelier invites its owners to participate in the creation. The tubes can be detached, and you can add liquids of various colors to change the appearance of the chandelier. These unique pieces of lighting fixtures are actually recycled lamps made from birch plywood. What makes them especially appealing is their beautiful play of shadow and light that changes with daylight. Each upcycle lamp is handmade in the Netherlands by Dutch artist Benjamin Spöth. He takes recycled birch plywood and cuts it into millimeter thin pieces. The pieces are then softened using steam. Afterwards, the treated strips are delicately manipulated to create a pattern.
