Picture House: Italian to the Bone

italian-house-design-picture

My deep affection towards this house, located in Ripatransone, Italy, began with the picture you see above. “An eye is the first instrument of an architect”, as one of the famous masters said, and, indeed this is true.

Being able to see the importance and the intimate beauty of this landscape, to see the necessity of introducing it into the interior space by means of such a marvelous panorama window – it is already a gift. I must confess, I would be able to close my eyes to the exterior for the sake of this single, truly ingenious interior design. Continue reading

Lake Como House: just like a phoenix

house-makeover-lake-como

Revitalizing an old house is always a big test for an architect. This peculiar process often stands as an opportunity to create new moments and atmosphere. The Lake Como House in northern Italy illustrates how refreshing this kind of architectonic procedure can be.

A 1970’s house has been turned into a modern building…How? In a very delicate way: the original pitched roof was substituted by a roof terrace while the ancient facades are now “dressed up” in an irregular wooden screen. There’s definitely something about this wonderful project. Continue reading

KLG Dachaufstockung: Another New-Meets-Old Story

I already wrote about a modern roof apartment in a 19th century Viennese building, mentioning how they love experimenting with historical roof reconstructions, adding stylish, daring volumes onto old Viennese houses. Personally I’m always fascinated with these beautiful new-meets-old stories, so I decided to share the next project with you as well. Continue reading

House R: a world of light

modern-house-light-r

Some architects are more interested in surfaces and forms, others are more involved with interior spaces or with light. In Karlsruhe, Germany, a contemporary house shows how light can be crucial for experiencing an interior’s ambiance. And to achieve this goal, a magnificent transparent facade facing the street welcomes us to enter into a world of light! Continue reading

Kolonihavehus: Explosively Colorful

colored-glass-house-tfruin

What various technological innovations do modern artists and architects invent to impress the audience, visually and emotionally! Whether it’s unique light performances, large scale color-changing fountains, or interactive art installations – the list goes on and on.

The author of this project used colored glass and combined it with a schematic form of a house, and … invited sunlight – this eternal natural source of beauty, life and positivity – to help him impress and delight people. Continue reading

Firma Casa: behind a living green wall

green-walls-firma-casa

A green wall for a building facade… Can you imagine how refreshing this concept can be? In Sao Paulo, Brazil, a furniture showroom testifies this unconventional belief: architecture made with living materials…not the usual elements, such as wood extracted from trees. Here, a living-breathing coat claims all the attention for its unusual beauty, whereas the real building stands behind a vertical hanging garden! Continue reading

Shield House: Welcoming Sail as a Highlight

modern-house-denver-shield

There’s often a distinct design feature about a building. This mighty feature works in exterior as well as interior spaces and holds the entire design concept of the project. Everything else obeys to its power and doesn’t violate the hierarchy.

In the case of the Shield House in Denver, Colorado, such highlight is undoubtedly the form and the structure of one of the side elevations. This side wall is not straight, but follows a curve, ending up at the top of the building with an additional roof and with an exit to a splendid roof terrace. Continue reading

Under the Moonlight House: Dramatically Generous

modern-architecture-moonlight

This strange, yet undoubtedly fascinating structure is located in Mount Hotham, Australia, and has a unique name: Under the Moonlight House. The shape of the building is no less unique.

The house consists of several structurally separated volumes, each of which ends up with a dramatically inclined gable. The volumes are made of vividly black metal structure and glass filling. These aspects, taken together (metal-glass structure, dramatic inclines of roofs and facade surfaces) create an interesting body, which resembles an avant-garde art pavilion or any other type of spectacular architecture. Continue reading

Burnette Residence: a social sculpture

modern-desert-home-burnette

Architecture is always for people to live and work in. So I think it’s fair to say that architecture is a kind of social sculpture! The Brunette residence appears in the landscape like a big inhabitable sculpture. A rectangular volume erupts from the desert soil in Arizona. Two extended facades are fragmented in regular wall portions, containing two floor levels. The visitor can choose two ways to access this nature’s extension: driving or walking! Continue reading

BoatHouse: a bright shiny place

A little leisure port seats the stage for a refreshing interpretation of the boathouse concept… In Fussach, Austria, a boathouse colony is now blessed by the shining silhouette of a different volume! Surrounded by a small canal, the Boathouse reflects its modern design in the Constance Lake blue dark water… And what a wonderful sight it is! Continue reading
