Modern Penthouse Apartment: Glass Bubbles

art-display-house-bubble

It’s hard to believe that what you see in front of you is the same structure – before and after. This architectural transformation is indeed a brilliant remodeling work, where a crumbling Murcia attic in south-eastern Spain has turned into an ultra modern penthouse apartment and space for displaying the owner’s personal collection of paintings. Edge House: From a different angle

apsen-home-edge-house-1

This beautiful home sits on a sloped 1.75-acre site, wedged between steep avalanche fields beneath Shadow Mountain and overhangs Castle Creek below. Building on a sloped angular site, with expansive views and full-day sun and avalanche exposure, was a challenge. In my opinion, the architects did a terrific job in creating a modern home that reflects the different angularities of its surroundings. Continue reading

Mountain Refuge C7: Chillout in Chille

Some placed are just to die for… And this one is no exception – The Andes Mountains in Chile. Located at 2,990 meters above sea level, in a terrain that is a steep rocky slope, the Mountain Refuge C7 makes the most of its stunning location. The 240 sq. meters structure is facing the breathtaking view of the lake and the Tres Hermanos Mountains. Over this strong and harsh natural landscape the house disappears from its view uphill, without interfering the view to the lake. Continue reading

The Black pearl Rotterdam

modern-home-blackpearl

I admit it, at first what drew me to this house was its name “Black Pearl”, it stirred my curiosity. Then, I noticed something strange about the facade windows. That was it. This house needed to be explored…

What was once an old crumbling building in Rotterdam, turned into a modern home and studio by Dutch studio Rolf.fr and Zecc Architecten. What I find fascinating are traces of the past, which are visible everywhere, both inside and outside the building; like an old banister, for example, and holes of wooden floor beams, or the old windows that have been painted black to become one with the new black exterior. Nesbitt House: Structure and Nature Combined

One of things I like most about the architectural work of Allen Maurer Architects, is the way they adapt their design to fit harmoniously with the existing landscape. It’s great to see how everything simply comes together, structure and nature combined. Continue reading

Maurer House: Just Right

green-home-bc-naramata

Not too big, yet with enough space for entertaining guests and a working studio, for me this house is just right. I love this house! Not only its location, but the design, the implementation and especially, the vision:

“do two people really need 5 bathrooms? By building only what we need, less material is used, less space needs to be heated, and more of the landscape is preserved for trees, plants, birds, insects, light and air.”

Villa 415 Geldrop: Above and Under Ground

modern-villa-geldrop

One of the most interesting aspects of modern architecture is finding creative solutions in order to deal with environmental issues, site location and budget – literally thinking out of the box. What caught my eye in the design of Villa Geldrop was the fact that half of it was situated below ground level. You dont see that everyday, do you? Continue reading
