What was once a contractor’s warehouse with a storage yard on a back alley in Toronto, is now a modern 2,200 sq. ft. home and office for the architects’ family. This two-story concrete block structure is completely sealed off from the street, with windows looking inward; however inside is a totally different story featuring a 30 foot wide main floor that opens onto a sunlit courtyard. This modern home has caught my eye. At first i was taken by the facade cut-outs, enhanced by the dark exterior made from stained black plywood panels, mounted in layers on a slowly grown pine framework. Later i discovered that the cut-out design, not only does it introduce light from several directions, it also allows the viewer to catch a glimpse of the different spaces of the house. The movie celebrates the life and career of Julius Shulman, one of the world’s greatest architectural photographers. Narrated by Dustin Hoffman, the movie is beautifully made, full of impressive visuals and graphics, interviews and behind the scenes look at photo shoots of some of the most unforgettable buildings and homes ever created.
